George (G.) Raymond Womeldorf was born in Lexington, Virginia in 1893 and raised on the family farm near east Lexington (Va.). He attended Washington and Lee University, graduating in 1917. During that year Womeldorf volunteered to join Washington and Lee University's ambulance unit, which would become U.S. Army Ambulance Service Section 534 and serve with distinction in France. A real photograph postcard of Washington and Lee University ambulance driver James Rowan (WLU class of 1914) standing in front of his ambulance in France during the First World War. The second image in this collection is of Robert P. Rowan in his military uniform wearing the U.S. Army's Distinguished Service Cross awarded to him for his heroism in combat as a corporal in Company A, of the 116th Infantry. The Rowan brothers were from Greenville, Augusta County, Virginia.
